We're doing things differently

We reckon that doing good should feel bloody good. Long gone are the days of change feeling heavy, hopeless or scary and say a big hello to power through pleasure. Have a squizz below to see how taking care of your sensual health and well-being is doing good for you, our community and the planet.

Natural, plastic-free products and packing

Each Motéa order you make means less plastic on our land and less plastic in our oceans. We include everything you need and leave out everything you don't, including:
  • No plastic products
  • No plastic packaging
  • No sticky-tape
  • No stickers
  • No plastic-lined pamphlets
  • No bubble wrap

What we do use instead:

  • Natural products made from glass (recyclable) and crystal (from the earth)
  • Compostable mailers
  • Recycled paper for postage labels
  • Plastic-free "bubble wrap"
  • Repurposed brown paper for padding donated by the community

We know reducing our waste can sometimes feel hard, so we've done all the work for you.

Let's be real here though - being a plastic-free business isn't just about what we do our end when we prep and send out your orders. After all, these products don't just appear out of thin air!

We are incredibly conscious that there is a chain of events that occur from collecting raw materials to producing the end product. By only stocking plastic-free products, this chain of events involves less leftover plastic waste as there is to create traditional (plastic) sex toys, such as some dildos and vibrators.

We also request all our orders from our wholesalers to be posted without plastic, however at times they need to use sticky tape to keep the package together during transit.

As Motéa is still in the early days, our next major step is to investigate what else we can do further up the chain to ensure that sustainable steps are being taken throughout the whole process.

If you have any feedback, questions or comments, please get in contact! We believe strongly in transparency and are doing our best to create better and more sustainable practices throughout our business and for others.

One Tree Planted

We've partnered with One Tree Planted to ensure that each product is making a real, physical impact right here in Australia - particularly after our last fire season.

The trees planted have been chosen that will bring the greatest overall benefit to the region. This includes various types of native trees and companion plants, depending on the specific needs of each section of habitat being restored.

Compostable mailers

We work hard to find the most sustainable solutions when it comes to being an earth-friendly brand. Part of that decision was to choose compostable mailers over recycled cardboard.

We use the brand Hero Packaging as they're an Aussie husband and wife super-duo and their mailers are able to be composted at home, compared to some other brands that have to take it to an industrial composting facility. Plus, if they don't make it into your compost or garden they will still break down in landfill!

Paying the rent

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri and Bunurong People, the Custodians of the land we work, live and play, and pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging of the Kulin Nation.

"The Wurundjeri People take their name from the Woiwurrung language word ‘wurun’ meaning the Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) which is common along ‘Birrarung’ (Yarra River), and ‘djeri‘, the grub which is found in or near the tree. Wurundjeri are the ‘Witchetty Grub People’ and our Ancestors have lived on this land for millennia." -- Quoted from Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

"Before the great pyramids in Egypt had been built, the Boon Wurrung / Bunurong people were here. They lived as all people of the Kulin nation lived, sustainably on the land for tens of thousands of years." -- Quoted from A brief history of the Boon Wurrung / Bunurong People

We truly believe we can't call ourselves environmentalist if we don't acknowledge the original people of the land we live. People that were here for 60,000 years before European settlers forcibly took it from them. People who had a strong connection to the land, waters and sky and all things living on it. We would not be facing the same environmental issues if our communities learnt how to live on this beautiful country the way it's original peoples did.

We strongly believe that change occurs by individual people taking personal responsibility and action, and we choose to act now in solidarity with Aboriginal people of Australia, therefore we have committed to pay 1% of our income to Pay The Rent and you can get involved too. One hundred percent of the Rent goes to Aboriginal people in Victoria.

"Saying Sorry Isn’t Enough".

Carbon neutral postage

We currently post our orders using Australia Post as we've found them to be the most reliable postage service, especially for those who live in apartments or rurally around Australia.

On the carbon neutral parcel delivery section on their website, which you can read about here, they report:

"We’re committed to delivering better environmental outcomes. That’s why we introduced carbon neutral parcel deliveries by purchasing carbon credits for customers who send parcels at our Post Offices or book parcel pickups with their MyPost Business account.

We've calculated just how much carbon is used when we process, ship and deliver our parcels using trains, planes and trucks. This calculation is verified as part of the National Carbon Offset Standard program, which provides guidance on measuring, reducing, offsetting and reporting emissions that occur as a result of our operations.

To make up for the pollution caused and help to achieve carbon neutrality, we buy carbon credits, mostly in Australia, to match the calculated emissions for the deliveries provided to our customers."

If you also love the nitty gritty details as much as I do, you can read Australia Post's Environmental Action Plan here

We also now offer local pick up, which you can select if you live within a certain radius of where we are based. This will come up as an option for you when you get to the check out with your order.

Bush fire relief

As most of you would be well aware, Australia experienced some of the largest bush fires at the end of 2019 and start of 2020. Many communities are still recovering from this massive disaster.

Motéa supported bush fire-affected communities across Australia by hosting a Bush fire Relief Raffle at our launch party on 29/11/19 and donated $5 from every sale up until Christmas. As a collective, we raised over $300 which went directly to the NSW Rural Fire Service and Aussie Red Cross.

The NSW Rural Fire Service were the incredible volunteer team directly on the front line of the fires, donating their time to look out for our community, animals and land. In the aftermath, they also continue to deliver bush fire recovery assistance to help people and businesses impacted by fires.

The Aussie Red Cross provided specialist emergency volunteers who worked at evacuation centres and helped people to get in touch with their loved ones. They continue to provide psychological first aid to those affected and assist with families getting back up on their feet.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri and Bunurong People, the Custodians of the land we work, live and play, and pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging of the Kulin Nation. Motéa celebrates, values and includes people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, bodies and abilities.
